There is a concept in the Bible called the year of jubilee where all of your debt is forgiven. That very nature is how big tax debt resolution companies advertise on television and play on our instinct and desire to get out from under the burden of our tax debt. They suck you in with a commercial showing “Tom and Judy” telling you how they owed the IRS $130,000 and they hired “ABC Tax Company” and only had to pay back $30,000. They never tell you the nature of the debt or how this magical settlement came about. Also, if you have a pause button on your television, pause it and read the small print at the bottom of those commercials, “may not represent typical results”. If you are considering such a company, check their history. How long have they been in business? Do they have Better Business Bureau Complaints? Ask them if an Enrolled Agent will actually handle your account or just oversee your account. In many of these companies, there are one or maybe two enrolled agents and the rest are just people filing papers per a protocol. They are not really looking at your individual situation. Will you be able to speak directly with an enrolled agent or with an account representative once you have contracted with the company to represent you before the IRS or state?
I am on my soapbox today because I spoke to a very nice gentleman yesterday who was taken advantage of by one of those big tax resolution companies and paid them $8,000. They never even offered him a solution to his problem, not even a payment program. Nothing was ever done.
